Measuring the Value of Career Services

Ms. Sareena Hopkins and Dr. Deirdre Pickerell

Recorded on Sep 15, 2022

Those working in career and employment services instinctively know their work makes a difference in the lives of their clients. The positive impacts of our work on clients often, in turn, translate into positive impacts for their families, communities, and even countries. Too often, however, funders and policy makers focus on a narrow set of outcomes that do not capture the full impact of career services and leave important client success stories untold. This session will offer practical insights and strategies for collecting, tracking, and reporting real client progress and outcomes that can inform quality service, demonstrate return on investment in career services and link quality career service to important public policy priorities.

Sareena Hopkins, Executive Director of the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF), works in Canada and internationally to strengthen the reach and impact of career development. With her team at CCDF, she moves from ideas to action in areas of public policy, research and development, capacity building and advocacy. Sareena is on the Board of the International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy and led Team Canada at the most recent International Symposium on Career Development and Public Policy in Norway. In 2014, Sareena was awarded the International Gold Medal for Leadership in Career Development.

Dr. Deirdre Pickerell has over 30 years’ experience as a career development specialist, human resource professional, and adult educator. As Program Director at the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF), Deirdre works on a variety of projects geared at elevating career development practice, ensuring individuals and employers have the knowledge and supports needed to thrive in learning and work. Deirdre led Team Canada at the 7th International Symposium on Career Development and Public Policy and has been honored with the Stu Conger Award for Leadership in Career Development and Career Counselling and BC Human Resources Management Association’s Award of Excellence.
